Bromsberrow Heath
Back ] Next ]

This dance can be performed by non-Border teams or members of the public,as it is quite easy to learn, and can be mastered in minutes (roughly). It therefore makes a good participation dance, allowing others a taste of the joy of Border Morris.I originally learnt this from Mike Salter workshops. The heys have to be performed very fast to get through all positions in the given music.

Click on this to see quite a different version performed by Silurian (on right) and Silkeborg (on left) in Denmark. I prefer this version. (4MBytes), or right-click and "Save Target As" to save it to your machine. The casualty is a member of Silurian.

I include a footnote of a variation that I have added, where many teams are present, and it requires sets of 24. Second Opinion

Set : Line of six dancers, facing in pairs. Single stepping and shuffling. Shuffling is just taking a step for each note. Squire calls "OFF" for reel, "SET" for sticking and "RANT" for stepping in place. When not clashing, the stick is held over the right shoulder. Music gets faster and faster. Start dance with clash on last note of bar. One long stick.

Music : The Three Handed Reel - (A) AB AB etc. Also Cock o' the North and The Flowers of Edinburgh. Originally by fiddle.

REPEAT with music getting faster each time until dancers or musicians cannot go on any longer. End on SET

Variation
Purely for the novelty value, I considered what the USA did when they found Stock Car racing too dull; they made the track into a figure-of-eight and called it a Demolition Derby.
For Demolition Bromsberrow Heath, teach four adjacent lines of the dancers, and allow them one run of the dance. Tell them not to wander off. Tell lines 1 and 3 to stand firm. Lead lines 2 and four out through the end and lead them in a large arc, feeding them into lines 1 and 3 at right angles. The set will now resemble a noughts and crosses layout. Ensure that the intersections are where dancers have their back to another dancer in their line. Before the dancers realise the ramifications of the new configuration, start the dance. The heys are hard enough to get round normally, but this time, the dancers have to cross other sets four times in each hey. Honest, this is a real hoot!
