Bangor were my first team, and it was they that put me on the road to Morris. Bastards! Snowdon 1979 See the world famous Bangor Morris dance on Snowdon!
In the Summer of 1976, I was shopping one Saturday in Bangor, and was passing the King's Arms pub (or was it the Queen's Arms?). The doors flew open and a crowd of Morris Men fell out. Literally. The front two fell to the floor, and the rest just fell over them. They were obviously too pissed to dance. They were hysterical with laughter. After a while, they got up and shambled into an Adderbury set and performed quite a passable dance. I had spent a lot of my youth Ballroom Dancing, and I thought :
All my favourite pastimes. They used to meet in the Bangor University Bar for practise. Dances were performed whilst holding a pint and gradually getting drunk. I expected the formal teaching that I had been accustomed. The Squire, Tony Foard, eyed me. "You're the new boy, are you? Got yourself a pint? There's a hole in the set over there. Off you go." The rest is history.
